Avatar 3: Fire and Ash<\/em> is reportedly going to contain an anti-AI disclaimer, making it known that its special effects are the work of human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first trailer for the long-awaited sequel has dropped, and people are understandably blown away by its effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world of Pandora has never looked so vivid and mesmerizing before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But reports have circulated that the movie will contain an anti-AI disclaimer, which raises the question: how are these stunning effects done?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The anti-AI disclaimer reportedly being featured in Avatar 3<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When the first Avatar<\/em> movie came out in 2009, it blew audiences away with its reality-defying special effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blue Na\u2019vis and the moon of Pandora enchanted moviegoers around the world and netted nearly $3 billion at the box office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s no wonder that Matt Damon was kicking himself for turning down the lead role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sequel, The Way of Water<\/em>, followed thirteen years later and grossed more than $2 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, the third installment, Avatar 3: Fire and Ash<\/em>, is on its way \u2013 and the epic trailer gave us a lot to be excited for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire and Ash <\/em>is expected to pick up where the last movie left out, and doesn\u2019t disappoint on the visual front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pandora looks as enchanting \u2013 and dangerous \u2013 as before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one thing\u2019s for certain \u2013 this entire world is the work of a very talented special effects team, not AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And James Cameron, the movie\u2019s director, reportedly wants you to know that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back in February, it was widely reported that an anti-AI title card would open up the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cameron reportedly said this during a Q&A session in New Zealand, in attendance by X user Josh Harding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sharing a picture of the critically acclaimed director to X, Harding shared some details on what had been said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSuch an *incredible* talk. Also, James Cameron revealed that Avatar: Fire and Ash will begin with a title card after the 20th Century and Lightstorm logos that \u2018no generative A.I. was used in the making of this movie\u2019,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, it\u2019d be a mistake to say he\u2019s anti-AI on the whole \u2013 he actually has quite nuanced views on the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don\u2019t believe [AI is] ever going to have something that\u2019s going to move an audience. You have to be human to write that. I don\u2019t know anyone that\u2019s even thinking about having AI write a screenplay,\u201d he told CTV News in 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, he seemed a little more open to AI during an April 2025 appearance on the Boz to the Future<\/em> podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having joined the board of directors for Stability AI back in September 2024, it\u2019s fair to say that he\u2019s not shut off to the technology altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the podcast, he said that if filmmakers wanted to continue to see movies like Dune<\/em>, or indeed one of his own movies, there needs to be a way to cut special effects budgets in half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s not even going into the money it took to keep Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet cool in the desert heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He emphasized that using AI wasn\u2019t \u2018about laying off half the staff at the effects company\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s about doubling their speed to completion on a given shot, so your cadence is faster and your throughput cycle is faster, and artists get to move on and do other cool things and then other cool things, right?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s my sort of vision for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How James Cameron and his team created Pandora<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Whether or not Cameron will start implementing AI after Avatar 3<\/em> drops remains to be seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But for now, let\u2019s reflect on the hard work that goes into creating the special effects for the movies as they are now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may also recognize their work from the Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Given that the second movie only contained two shots with no VFX, we can expect similar things in the third outing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A number of technological improvements occurred between the first and second movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lightweight HD head cameras were used to record the actors\u2019 facial performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This allowed for actors like Sam Worthington and Sigourney Weaver to truly embody their blue-skinned characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also two digital puppets to work with in the second movie, as opposed to just one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One was an accurate copy of the real-life actor, whilst the other was of the actor\u2019s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This allowed the special effects team to make the character\u2019s movements match the actor\u2019s as closely as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second movie featured extensive amounts of underwater scenes, which proved to be a challenge for the motion capture system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cIt\u2019s never been done before, and it\u2019s very tricky because our motion capture system, like most motion capture systems, is what they call optical base, meaning that it uses markers that are photographed with hundreds of cameras,\u201d Cameron told Collider.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe problem with water is not the underwater part, but the interface between the air and the water, which forms a moving mirror.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat moving mirror reflects all the dots and markers, and it creates a bunch of false markers. It\u2019s a little bit like a fighter plane dumping a bunch of chaff to confuse the radar system of a missile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt creates thousands of false targets, so we\u2019ve had to figure out how to get around that problem, which we did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s tech speak for \u2018water makes things ten times harder for the special effects team\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avatar 3<\/em> is set to have underwater scenes too, but other details of the movie have been kept relatively quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
